Rumours are swirling that Prince Harry may be training at Canadian Forces Base Suffield in southern Alberta. A media lockout at the base has fuelled speculation resulting in dozens of calls being made to a Medicine Hat radio station.
A station co-host said some people are saying they can vouch for the fact the prince is in town, but aren’t willing to give their names or go on air. A Calgary newspaper reported he arrived Wednesday afternoon.
Harry, 22, was set to be deployed to Iraq as a British army officer earlier this spring. In an earlier speech, he said he would not have gone through the rigours of officer training at the elite Sandhurst military academy to “then sit on my a*** back home while my boys are out fighting for their country.” But, in the end it was decided that it would be too dangerous for the other troops and for the prince, whose life has been threatened to travel to the war-torn country.
Just this week, British media reported a new plan that would see Harry headed to Afghanistan instead. Harry, a second lieutenant, is a tank commander trained to lead a 12-man team in four armoured reconnaissance vehicles.
CFB Suffield, which is approximately 50 kilometres northwest of Medicine Hat and 250 kilometres southeast of Calgary, is home to the British Army Training Unit Suffield. There are currently 5,000 troops at BATUS. The unit’s communications officer, Capt. Mark Beaman, would not confirm or deny the rumour.
