Tornado Watch Ends For Cottage Country

As another day of heat and humidity end in cottage country, residents there are breathing a sigh of relief. The tornado warnings that had been posted for regions to the north of the GTA for hours were called off around 7:30pm Tuesday. And despite the possibility of severe storms, the worst didn’t happen. It follows a difficult 24 hours for those who call the Greater White North home. Power was knocked out to more than 4,000 customers in Huntsville and Parry Sound Monday afternoon, as hydro poles were knocked down and bolts from the blue took out transformers. Most were powered back up by Tuesday.

Toronto and the GTA should be spared any whirling winds but we could experience our own thunder rumblings as the heat and the humidity here lead to the kind of conditions that could spawn a violent disturbance. Highs in the GTA  touched 30 again Tuesday, and humidex levels made it feel warmer than that. And the Ministry of the Environment has now called a smog advisory for the city, as well as York, Peel and Durham Regions. It will stay unsettled and polluted into Wednesday, when we finally get some relief. The passage of another cold front is expected to make things feel a lot more comfortable with highs dropping to the mid-20s by late in the week and overnight lows downright cool, in the mid-teens.
