Juniors Ready For Carnival Action

Saturday marks one of the most popular events in advance of Caribana‘s big parade, and Friday night the hundreds of participants involved in the Junior Carnival were going through the motions one more time.

Most are under 13, and all are seasoned professionals in the junior battle of the bands.

“It’s really fun, you’re having a good time and you’re hanging out with your friends,” said veteran performer Victoria Radhay.

Victoria’s part of the group Callaloo, dancing under the theme “Conquest of Alexander.”

They’re going for their third win as Band of the Year, but though they’re one of 13 bands in the competition, the 150 kids are hardly consumed with winning, even though they’ve been working for months to make sure every detail is just right.

“It’s just for the kids,” said Callaloo elder Marlon Singh. “I don’t go there to win … we go to have a good time, for the kids to have a good time, to see a smile on their face.

“Even if they don’t do it again they’ll remember it.”

The carnival starts at 10am Saturday on Shoreham Drive in North York before heading south on Jane Street and ends at Yorkgate Mall at Finch. A post-Carnival party will begin at 1pm.
