King And Queen Competition

A sold-out crowd took in Thursday night’s King and Queen of Caribana competition at Lamport Stadium.  This year, the costumes were more extravagant than ever, with some weighing up to 300 pounds.

“You have to enjoy the costume and enjoy the music and you have to move the costume to its fullest advantage,” said last year’s runner up Susanne Low.

There are 64 competitors vying for the title and the more elaborate the costume the better.

Over 7,000 fans packed Lamport Stadium with visitors from as far away as the Caribbean and California.

“I remember when it was like 13 bands and it was so small going down university avenue. Now it’s huge,” recalled one attendee.
