Second Subway Shutdown Causes Commuter Chaos

It was “that kind of morning” for commuters on Friday. The end of a long week started with a subway shutdown on the Bloor-Danforth line and continued with another breakdown a few hours later on the University-Spadina line. And both were caused by the same thing.

The later problem centered at St. Clair West when a personal injury accident stopped all trains between Lawrence West and Spadina stations. That forced hundreds of late morning passengers out into the streets and onto crowded shuttle buses, which took a long route to get them between the affected stations.

The earlier trouble began during the rush hour at the St. George stop. Another health problem with a passenger forced the shutdown of first 14 stations, then 10 for almost an hour. There was no service on the Bloor-Danforth line between Ossington and Broadview. The long wait on the crowded streets created the usual backlog and grumpy passengers, who had to wade into already busy traffic to get to work.

If there was any good news in all this: the heat wave that had gripped the city earlier in the week gave us a temporary reprieve, and those forced onto all those buses at least weren’t sweltering  as they stood shoulder to shoulder with everyone else.
