The Toronto Blue Jays won their second straight game against the division-leading Boston Red Sox after fighting back to earn a 4-3 victory on Tuesday night.
A.J. Burnett took to the mound for 8 2/3 innings, allowing just three runs on nine hits. He also struck out 11 batters.
Pinch-hitter Russ Adams capped an eighth inning rally with a two-run double off Eric Gagne. The Sox were up 2-1 when Matt Stairs walked to load the bases before Gregg Zuan’s base on balls tied things up. That set the stage for Adams, who tore into a 3-2 pitch that sailed over the head of right-fielder J.D. Drew to make it 4-3.
The two straight losses have narrowed the Sox lead in the American League East to just 2 1/2 over the New York Yankees.
“We’re just trying to excite the Big Smoke, the big T.O.,” said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. “There’s no question this time of year when you’re playing the top teams and you’re out of it, it brings some incentive.”
