It may have only been a pre-season match up, but it had all the ingredients of a classic installment of the Battle of Ontario — a couple spirited scraps, some beautiful goals, and much to the chagrin of die hard Toronto Maple Leaf fans, an Ottawa Senators victory.
Ottawa edged the Leafs at the Air Canada Centre 4-3 on Monday night.
Christoph Schubert scored twice, Patrick Eaves notched one on the power play and Dany Heatley had the other Ottawa goal, while captain Mats Sundin, John Pohl and Alexei Ponikarovsky replied for the Buds, who outshot Ottawa 38-32, but still ended up on the losing end.
“It’s always easier if you have a good team behind you,” said Schubert, who was drafted 127 th overall in 2001. “It’s a nice accomplishment for myself and I’m happy right now.”
“Everybody knew what the message was when we came to camp,” Schubert added. “We all want to win the Stanley Cup.”
