In the movies, a fight between lovers often ends with the man on the couch. In real life, sleeping in separate quarters usually has nothing to do with dramatic confrontations, and a lot to do with catching quality Z’s.
Austrian researchers recently studied ten couples and found the when women slept with their male partners, their sleep was often interrupted. Men on the other hand, didn’t experience the same disturbances.
“If both people are barraged by an equal level of sound, women will be more disturbed,” explained Dr. Colin Shapiro, Sleep Specialist, Toronto Western Hosp.
“It might be a genetic thing built into women to be more alert and attentive at night. So for example if a baby cries, they will wake up.”
And what if you try to tough it out night after night while your partner saws logs? Dr. Shapiro doesn’t advise it.
“People who have disturbed sleep live shorter lives.”
