Chris Bosh finally made a major statement with a big-game performance, but tying his career high with 41 points wasn’t enough to propel his Toronto Raptors teammates to victory in what ended as a 111-108 loss Saturday afternoon in Cleveland.
Instead it was Cavs superstar LeBron James, who dropped 37 points as part of his 13th NBA double-double, taking over late and pouring in six points in the final minute to seal the victory on his home court.
Despite carrying a lead well into the second half, the Raptors shriveled again down the stretch while the Cavaliers hit nine three-pointers in the second, including six in third quarter. Zydrunas Ilgauskas’ layup midway through the fourth quarter put the Cavaliers ahead for good at 88-86.
Toronto stayed within sniffing distance right down the buzzer, with Jason Kapono hitting consecutive big shots to cut the lead to one, but each time King James would respond, including a dagger of a fadeaway from the top of the key with just 16.7 seconds left. A last-second launch from Raps point guard Jose Calderon was well wide.
The good news from Saturday is that the Raptors will have absolutely no time to dwell on their failings, as they head back home to welcome the struggling Chicago Bulls at the Air Canada Centre for their second-straight matinee Sunday afternoon.
