Like any woman with a history of breast cancer in her family, Brinda Share whose sister died from the disease said she just can’t help worrying about her own health.
“It’s always in the back of your mind,” she said.
But thanks to medical and technological advances, the disease if caught early enough can be cured.
The key to prevention is early detection and now there’s a website designed by the National Cancer Institute in the U.S. that features a five-minute test that assesses your risk of getting breast cancer.
When asked how she feels about knowing what her chances are of getting it, Share replied, “That would be something that I would really want to know.”
The test is made up of seven questions relating to things like the age of first menstrual cycle, childbearing and family medical history to name a few.
And although the quick and easy test may give some women peace of mind, Dr. Verna Mai from Cancer Care Ontario cautioned against taking the results of the test too seriously. “There are other risk factors that can reduce or increase your risk of breast cancer, and these include alcohol intake and adult weight gain,” he said.
