Officials have now released the text of the suicide note left behind by Omaha mall shooter Robert A. Hawkins. The 19-year-old went on a rampage at a shopping centre on Wednesday, taking eight innocent lives and wounding five more before turning his lethal weapon on himself.
The note depicts a seriously disturbed teenager who claims he “just snapped” and felt he had nothing left to lose and whose rage was so strong, he decided that others would have to share in his misery. It comes on the same day cops released some chilling stills (top left) of the gunman as he carried out his final act.
“I know everyone will remember me as some sort of monster but please understand that I just don’t want to be a burden on the ones that I care for my entire life,” he wrote. “I just want to take a few pieces of s*** with me.”
The first page, without punctuation, is addressed to his shocked friends. “I love all of you so much and I don’t want anyone to miss me just think about how much better you are off without me to support.”
The second page is left for his family. “I’ve just snapped,” he wrote. “I can’t take this meaningless existence anymore I’ve been a constant disappointment and that trend would have only continued.”
He concludes with a sad message to his parents. “I love you mommy. I love you dad,” and expressed love for several other acquaintances. And he ended it with a chilling thought. “Just think tho I’m gonna be (expletive) famous.”
The final page outlines his will. “I’m giving my car back to my mom and my friends can have whatever else I leave behind.”
Officials have since revealed that Hawkins was a seriously disturbed drug abuser, who once tried to murder his stepmother. He was released from psychiatric care just prior to his 19th birthday, with officials noting he was no longer a danger – and would have been able to leave on his own after his birthday either way.
