While Sunday’s big storm slowly makes its way to the Maritimes, the northeastern part of the U.S. is also falling prey to potentially one of the worst wintry blasts in decades.
The extreme weather is being blamed for three deaths south of the border.
The National Weather Service posted winter storm warnings from Michigan and Indiana all the way to Maine. Nearly a foot of snow has already fallen in the Chicago area and meteorologists are predicting an accumulation of up to 14 inches in parts of Michigan by late Sunday.
Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman Mike Claffey said 1,000 trucks were out clearing snow. The city of Chicago had close to 400 trucks and snowplows working overnight.
Hundreds of flights were reportedly cancelled at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and there were numerous delays at Buffalo Niagara International Airport. No delays were reported at Boston’s Logan Airport, but officials urged travelers to check with their airlines. Boston is expected to get up to 8 inches of snow, with heavier amounts likely in northern New England.
An estimated 103,000 customers were reportedly left without power Sunday morning in parts of Pennsylvania.
