Some witnesses are calling it the worst accident they’ve ever seen. A car that was virtually split in two by a pole closed a stretch of Weston Road from St. Clair to Gunns Road Friday afternoon. The incident may have been sparked by police involvement in the neighbourhood.
The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in to probe the mishap, and some bystanders report being forced to duck flying debris after the impact.
Wheelchair bound Kate Davis was one of them. “I just saw the guy come across the road and crash into the post,” she recalls. “I saw the cops come up but they didn’t have their lights on or their sirens. I was lucky to get out of the way in time.”
Donna Rukavina was driving behind the car that eventually crashed and witnessed the incident and the frightening aftermath. “The passenger was stuck in the car,” she said. “The car is like in a million pieces, it makes you wonder what really happened. I think he lost control. He was right behind us when we were driving, he could have hit me.
“It’s pretty devastating, it’s scary.”
Crews were forced to use the Jaws of Life to get the trapped occupant out of the vehicle and at least two people were rushed to hospital. There’s no immediate word on whether either survived the crash.
It’s not clear if a police chase sparked the horrific crash or whether those inside simply panicked at the sight of a cruiser. The SIU is expected to look into both possibilities.
