Devils Halt Leafs Winning Streak At Three Games

The Toronto Maple Leafs had a few days to forget about their struggles during a three-game winning streak, but Sunday the New Jersey Devils reminded them there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done.

John Madden scored two in the rare Sunday matinee, and Martin Brodeur did just enough to hand the Buds a 3-2 road loss.

Brodeur made 34 saves, including a couple from close in late in the game, and Travis Zajac also scored for the Devils, who ended a two-game losing streak.

Darcy Tucker and Pavel Kubina scored for Toronto, which had won three straight.

The game remained scoreless until the final three minutes of the second period when Zajac jammed his marker home.

Madden extended the Devils’ lead to 3-0 at 3:54 of the third when Paul Martin’s shot deflected off his skate while he was tied up in front of the net by Nik Antropov.

Toronto countered with two of its own goals, but coming off a victory at home late Saturday night and with back-up netminder Andrew Raycroft (pictured) between the pipes, Paul Maurice’s club looked sleepy and clearly lacked the ability to get over the hump and back into the game once it was down three.

Brodeur ended up preserving the win by stopping a pair of close-in chances from Alex Steen in the closing seconds.

Up next for Leafs is a home-and-home with the Washington Capitals beginning Wednesday in Toronto.
