Male Cosmetic Surgery Becoming More Common

They take in your tummy. They nip your nose. They smooth out your wrinkles. They iron the droop out of your eyelids. Cosmetic surgery is nothing new for women, but it might surprise you to hear that all those procedures are actually just as often performed on men.

And you don’t have to be a celebrity to go under the knife. Ordinary guys like Mike Cameron of Toronto are having a little something done, too.

“It’s not that big a deal. I mean it’s available, so why not?,” he told  Health Specialist Laura DiBattista.

In the last eight years, there’s been a 200 percent increase in men getting Botox injections. Other cosmetic procedures have skyrocketed as well.

And most of the men, like Mike, are between 35 and 50-years-old.

“When I first started 10 years ago, I might see one guy a month. Now about 20 to 25 percent of my clients are guys,” said Dr. Stephen Mulholland, cosmetic surgeon.

“Mentally I feel better. I just feel younger I guess,” Cameron added. “Guys get old like women, and they’re in a boardroom, a competitive environment where they’ve got to stay young because youth is equated with confidence and success.”

But a quick survey showed that most men still aren’t on the bandwagon.

CityNews hit the streets to ask some men what they think “Restylane” – a wrinkle smoothing injection – means?

“Rest and Ritalin?,” one guy blurted out.

“No idea,” admitted another.

More invasive surgical procedures are also popular among men. The number one procedure is the nose job, followed by cheek implants and operations to reduce breast tissue in gynecomastia.
