It is a place of unimaginable carnage, a bloody scene that has left even veteran detectives wondering about the violence that people are capable of and the rage that drives them to it.
A man is being questioned and a victim is dead, after a woman was found with her neck slashed in a Rathburn and Hwy. 427 apartment Tuesday afternoon. Police received a 911 call around 2pm from a distraught man who allegedly told the emergency operator he’d just killed his wife.
Still, no one expected the gruesome scene that greeted investigators when they arrived at 545 The West Mall minutes later. The victim was discovered in a 15th floor apartment and quickly pronounced dead. The first officers on the scene reported that the woman had been ‘decapitated’ but closer examination shows she suffered severe but fatal deep slash wounds to her neck instead.
Her husband was immediately taken away for questioning as experts began processing the grisly scene.
Those who live in the normally quiet complex are stunned by the news. “They were always nice to me,” neighbour Bill Bowers relates. “The gentleman always wanted me to go first, you know, and his wife was very, very quiet.”
Others came home from work, only to learn of the shocking murder that had taken place just hours before. Many were questioned by police. “They just asked if I heard any bangs or anything like that,” one explains.

“We do have a lot of police actually, to that floor,” neighbour Stacey Chabot said.

It’s not clear what may have sparked the dispute that led to such a tragic ending but cops confirm they’re not looking for any other suspects. The 60-year-old man was taken away from the building in handcuffs, as neighbours were told to stay inside their apartments.
Many describe the couple as quiet but nice. Two older children also reside in the apartment. It’s not believed either of them was inside when the crime occurred.
