Cops in a cab appear to have foiled an escape following a robbery at Oakville’s Heritage Corner Convenience Tuesday.
It’s alleged that two males dressed in hooded sweaters entered the convenience store with a large knife just before 10pm, confronting the lone employee in an effort to relieve the register of its contents.
It was at this time, however, that the store clerk’s wife heard yelling inside and called her husband, who answered and quickly stated he couldn’t talk. Sensing something was amiss, she quickly notified police, just as the two males fled the store with an undisclosed amount of cash, leaving the man behind the counter shaken but unharmed.
Demonstrating savvy and quick thinking, police alerted taxi companies in the area and were informed that a cab had been dispatched to a location not far from the scene of the robbery. It was also noted that the caller had been out of breath.
Two officers quickly met the taxi driver ahead of the pick-up and for his own safety arranged to take over the job.
When the taxi arrived, sure enough two male suspects approached and confirmed they needed a cab.
Seconds later they were both arrested and with the help of the Halton canine unit a property search located numerous pieces of evidence, not the least of which was the knife they allegedly used in the robbery.
Daniel Clapham, 18, and 19-year-old Oskar Balaban both face multiple charges.
