The thought of an explosion sent workers scrambling out of a Canada Post building Tuesday.
Gateway Postal Facility, which sorts the mail, was evacuated after a bomb scare that turned out to be false.
Canada Post said Friday that a leaking lithium battery was the cause for the panic.
The package was noticed on the loading dock, as employees saw yellowish smoke and smelled a sulfurous odour coming from the mail.
There were 30 batteries inside the parcel, and one of them burst. It had crashed into another battery.
The suspicious parcel was tossed, and employees were back at work less than two hours after the evacuation.
Lithium batteries are dangerous goods and cannot be sent through the mail.
