The possibility of a TTC strike was bad enough, but even when it was averted anyone that drives to work still had to deal with another shock at the gas pumps. A litre of regular unleaded fuel is going for $1.20 a litre Friday , as high as it’s been so far in 2008.
There have been several up and down weeks recently but this week prices have only moved in one direction – up. There’s been a five cent increase in only the past few days.
Liberal MP and gas industry watchdog Dan McTeague accused refiners of cheating consumers, saying the state of the market doesn’t justify rising prices. He suggests the hike is due to “lemming-like speculation by investors.” See his early warning gas price website here.
Prices average $1.20 a litre in southern Ontario, but are higher in the northern parts of the province. According to http://www.gasbuddy.ca/, prices in Montreal and Newfoundland are sitting at about $129.9 a litre.
Meanwhile, Halifax is reporting prices in the $1.28 a litre area, and stations in Winnipeg and Vancouver were charging $1.26 a litre.
Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg and P.E.I. were also sitting above $1.20 a litre, while Edmonton drivers were faring a bit better, paying about $1.189 a litre.
