SIU Clears Cop Who Tasered Suspect In Brampton Double Stabbing

It won’t come as much of a surprise, but the province’s Special Investigations Unit has found Peel Police did nothing wrong when they Tasered a man accused of brutally stabbing a married couple to death in a Brampton strip mall.

It was April 30th when Rahimullah Shahghasy saw a man attacking his wife with a knife outside a hair salon in the Red Maple Plaza near McLaughlin Road and Williams Parkway. When he tried to intervene to save her, he wound up being stabbed as well. Both suffered fatal wounds.

When police arrived at the bloody crime scene, they encountered a suspect they say was still armed with a blade – and who then began using it on himself, slashing his own throat. They were forced to Taser him as he looked to do yet more damage.

“In order to prevent the man from causing himself further grievous bodily harm, or worse, the officer shot the man with a Taser. The man fell to the ground, dropping the knife,” relates SIU director James Cornish. “The evidence, both police and civilian, satisfies me that the subject officer did not cause this man’s injuries, indeed quite the contrary. The actions of the officer quite probably saved this man’s life.”

Dwayne Palmer, a 28-year-old Brampton man who lived near the scene, is charged with two counts of second-degree murder. There has never been a clear reason for the terrible attacks, although some theories suggest the man may have allegedly been trying to steal the couple’s car when Nazifa Shahghasy attempted to stop him.

So far, there have been few answers to confirm those suggestions either way – Palmer suffered severe throat wounds and was unable to speak at his first court hearing. He remains in Maplehurst Correctional Facility.
