Residents Of 2 Secord Wait For Word On Return, Won’t Get Rent Back

While all but a handful of truly unlucky North York residents displaced by the Sunrise Propane blast have been allowed to return home, roughly 1,000 inhabitants of a high rise on Secord Avenue near Main and Danforth are still without a place to call home and a sizeable amount of cash they might want to put towards a new one.

A hydro vault explosion in the basement of the 21-storey building forced an evacuation on July 20 and with no timetable set for a return, more bad news came Thursday night when tenants were told they wouldn’t be getting back last month’s rent despite being unable to enter the building.

The meeting was called to address questions about when residents might be able to return, questions that many argue were in no way answered.

Early September appears to be an optimistic estimate, but there was no specific date given and tenants were pushed even further by word they’re still required to give 60 days notice on moving if they’re month-to-month and that remaining lease agreements could not be broken.
