Man Suffers Serious Injuries After Car Crashes Into Bus Shelter

What seemed like a simple day’s work has led to a long road to recovery for a man working on a TTC bus shelter Monday afternoon. The employee, who does not work for the Toronto Transit Commission, was doing some maintenance work on the waiting area located at Victoria Park and Consumers Road around 1pm, when the structure was hit by an SUV.

Police believe the driver of the blue Subaru may have confused the pedals on the car and hit the accelerator instead of the brakes, causing the vehicle to veer out of control and head straight for the bus shelter.

Reports from the scene indicate the victim parked his truck on the northwest corner of the street and that the other motorist may have tried to go around it, when she accidentally hit the gas.

“As the vehicle slowed to drive around this vehicle, which was stopped … for an unknown reason she had what appears to be maybe pedal confusion and turned back into the curb and struck the bus shelter,” explains Sgt. Allan Finley. “The vehicle then continued through and struck the light standard and knocked it to the ground.”

The worker reportedly flew about 30 feet into the air, suffering serious injuries to his legs and arms. But he survived the terrible accident and the victim, said to be in his 30s, has been rushed to hospital for treatment of non-life threatening wounds.

The driver, in her early 70s, wasn’t hurt and police have now charged her with careless driving.

The intersection, which is located between Sheppard Ave. and the 401, was closed for hours as police towed away the wreckage and reconstructed the accident. But it’s fixing the light pole that proved to be the real impediment to getting traffic back to normal and experts were on the scene attempting to put up a new one.
