The cost of getting a BA is about to get a whole lot pricier. At least that’s according to a new report put out by the non-profit Educational Policy Institute.
The think-tank predicts the jump in enrolment and dwindling government and private funding expected as a result of the recession will mean Canada’s colleges and universities will need to increase fees by as much as 25 per cent in the next couple of years.
The study figures the hikes would generate $1 billion to $2 billion in added revenue and that post-secondary institutions will also boost student aid and cut senior staff.
The good news, according to the authors, is Canadians can afford to pay more. More students have been able to find jobs to pay for school, they say.
The Canadian Federation of Students has reportedly called the report an absurd proposal.
