The family of a woman accused of killing her 18-month-old son gathered to grieve Saturday.
Jayden Bernard was found dead inside his mother’s SUV in a Mississauga parking garage last month. Police allege Nadine Bernard who was in a custody battle with the child’s married father, killed her son before trying to kill herself.
Bernard, 34, has since been charged with first-degree murder. She has two other children, a 14-year-old girl and an 11-year-old girl, who are staying with Bernard’s parents in Bolton.
According to published reports, Jayden’s father had an affair with Bernard and they had allegedly been involved in a custody battle.
The father’s family held a funeral for the boy last week and the Bernard family was said to be not invited to the service. Jayden was cremated at the ceremony.
On Saturday, his maternal grandparents held a service for the slain toddler at the Bramalea Christian Fellowship in Brampton.
“She was an excellent mother. This is a surprise for everybody involved and we want to support her parents and siblings,” explained family friend Diamond Bennett.
A trust fund has been set up to provide for Bernard’s two daughters. She will next appear in court April 23.
