They’re shocking messages of hatred and intolerance, and they’re scrawled on the wall of a Pickering elementary school.
Police were called to Highbush Public School on 605 Stroud’s Lane over the Easter weekend and what they found could only be called offensive: three anti-Semitic messages spray-painted on the exterior of the facility.
“We believe some time over the holiday weekend, we are not certain of the time, at least one or a number of suspects may have caused damage to the school,” noted Staff Sgt. John Givelas of Durham Regional Police.
Members of the community were appalled by what they saw.
“We were shocked because Pickering is a quiet place and don’t expect that wording over the schools or these types of settings,” said Ruth Klein of B’nai Brith. “It’s especially difficult with children affected.”
The school board hired a contractor to sandblast the messages off in time for students’ return to class Tuesday.
There’s no word yet on whether police have any suspects in mind.
