Broken Axle Could Be To Blame For CP Derailment

It will be weeks before we know exactly what happened, but investigators believe they may have found the possible cause of a train crash.

A CP train derailed on Friday in a residential area in Oshawa, forcing hundreds of people from their homes and shutting down schools and stores.

A broken axle could be to blame.

Two locomotives and 27 of the 111 train cars went off the tracks, causing heavy damage near Highway 401 and Park Road.

A chemical scare compelled police to call an evacuation order but everyone was back home by Saturday night. No one was injured.

At least one of the cars was carrying hydrogen peroxide. Oshawa Mayor John Gray is questioning whether changes should be made to the way chemicals are transported.

The Transportation Safety Board and Canadian Pacific Rail are investigating.
