At Last! A Near Perfect Summer Weekend

After a Victoria Day weekend with frost in the forecast and a month that some have termed “Juneuary” because of its below normal temperatures, you’re finally going to get something you haven’t seen in a while – an almost perfect summer weekend.

Readings in June have been far below normal, with only one day in the entire month so far actually hitting the average of about 23C. But unlike Saturdays and Sundays of the past several weeks, you won’t have to contend with cold temperatures, high winds or any sustained rain.

Instead forecasters are calling for a weekend of mostly solid sunshine, with highs of 20C on Saturday, a near perfect 23C on Sunday and with the exception of a chance of very isolated showers in the late afternoon both days, a great stretch of weather into the coming work week.

By Tuesday, we should finally hit 24C, and Thursday’s forecast calls for temperatures to reach 25C, a bit above normal. By late next week we could be as high as 28C with building humidity.

It’s been a long climb to summer and it’s vastly different from what we experienced last year at this time. The early part of June 2008 was a scorcher, with record breaking temperatures. It was 33.3C on June 6th, the highest mark for that date in history.

It stayed in the 30s and set another record three days later, when the mercury climbed to 34.1C.

By comparison, we haven’t made into the 30s once this year.

But 2008 was also the wettest summer in history. An astounding 460 millimetres of rain fell from the start of summer until its end in September, far above the 295 mm that’s the average. And much of it came in the form of heavy downpours.

All that followed 2007, which was the driest summer on record.

Given those extremes, what can you expect this year?

It’s too soon to tell but enjoy the rare perfect weekend while it lasts. Summer officially arrives on June 21st and the heat is on from many sun worshippers to make sure that sooner than later, the heat they’ve been missing is finally on, too.
