NFB Opens Its Doors To The Public All Weekend Long

If you’re wondering what’s new in the world of Canadian filmmaking and animation, there’s an event this weekend that will fill you in.

The National Film Board of Canada is opening its doors on Saturday and Sunday for an open house, in part to celebrate its 70th anniversary.

The family-friendly event takes place on Saturday from noon to 10pm, and on Sunday from noon to 5pm, at the NFB’s home in the heart of the Entertainment District.

So what can you expect? On Saturday, you can cozy up in the Mediatheque’s cinema for a screening of a series of animated shorts based on children’s books. There are six films in total, including The Girl Who Hated Books, Tzaritza, I Want a Dog, Blackberry Subway Jam, The Friends of Kwan Ming and Oma’s Quilt. You can catch the program, which runs 48 minutes, starting at 1pm.

You can also try your hand at some of the techniques used in today’s world of animation, including painting on glass, drawing on film, paper cut-out and 3D stop-motion.

Don’t worry if you feel like your artistic ability isn’t up to par – no experience is needed and anyone can participate.

If that’s not up your alley, you can check out the NFB’s digital viewing stations where you can view its vast number of award-winning titles. You’ll be able to leave your mark by putting together your own playlist for others to see.

NFB is also organizing scavenger hunts to help participants discover some of the most groundbreaking works in its collection. The best part? It’s all free.
