New On DVD – September 22, 2009

Observe and Report (Blu-ray) CityNews.ca Pick of the Week – Ronnie Barnhardt (Seth Rogen) is a security guard at Forest Ridge Mall. He goes above and beyond the call of duty after a flasher offends the woman of his dreams – perfume girl Brandi (Anna Faris). Sure, the film is twisted and outrageous and although it didn’t catch on in the theatre I stand by my original review – this is the perfect movie to watch while having some beers with your buddies. The Blu-ray release features picture-in-picture commentary with Seth Rogen, Anna Faris and writer/director Jody Hill, a Forest Ridge Mall security recruitment video, additional scenes, a digital copy of the film and more. Film *** out of 5 stars. Blu-ray **** out of 5 stars.

If you like Observe and Report check out the first season of Jody Hill’s television show Eastbound & Down.

Star Trek: The Original Series – Season 2 (Blu-ray) – This is a no-brainer for any Star Trek fan. Besides all the episodes having updated enhanced effects and sound there is a special disc for The Trouble with Tribbles, easily the best-known episode of any Star Trek series. The disc not only contains the episode (with original and updated effects) but also the animated sequel More Tribbles, More Troubles (with commentary by writer David Gerrold) as well as the Deep Space Nine episode Trials and Tribble-ations and its two featurettes Trials and Tribble-ations: Uniting Two Legends and Trials and Tribble-ations: An Historic Endeavor. There is also a slew of other features in the set that will excite all die-hard Trek fans. Blu-ray **** out of 5 stars.

Deadgirl – Two teenage boys find a naked woman tied up in the basement of an abandoned asylum. Is she alive or dead? To one of the boys it doesn’t matter and he decides to have his way with her. That’s when things quickly spiral out of control and soon the “Deadgirl” is more alive than first thought. Sounds better on paper than it was executed on film. It does have some eerie and bizarre moments but horror fans will be bored for most of it. Special features are slim with a making-of featurette as the only extra. Film ** out of 5 stars. DVD * out of 5 stars.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past – Hands down the worst movie of the year! Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner have no chemistry and the entire film is an insult to our intelligence. Don’t waste your money or your mind on this drivel. No special features on the DVD. Also available on Blu-ray. Film * out of 5 stars. DVD * out of 5 stars.
