Earthquake hits Taiwan

A large earthquake has struck Taiwan, rattling buildings in the capital of Taipei.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the 6.4-magnitude quake was centred off the eastern coast of Taiwan, about 25 kilometres from Hua-lien.

It struck at a depth of 45 kilometres.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre did not immediately issue any warning.

TV reports say subways in the capital of Taipei and the island’s high speed railroad are operating.

Taiwan television did not report any immediate casualties.

There was some damage to property in a community near the quake’s epicentre.
