Dubai opened the world’s tallest tower, Monday, and that means Toronto’s CN Tower is not where it use to be on the list of tallest free standing structures.
In fact, the CN Tower has slipped to number three on the list of “tall.”
Dubai’s skyscraper was named Burj Khalifa in a surprise move apparently intended to honour the United Arab Emirates’ president. It is more than 160 stories high and stands 272 metres taller than the CN Tower.
The tower also has the most occupied floors of any building in the world.
According to the developer it cost about $1.5-billion to build the tower of luxury apartments and offices.
There are also four swimming pools, a private library and a hotel designed by Giorgio Armani.
Meantime, the Guangzhou TV and Sightseeing Tower in China is still under construction and will also stand taller than the CN Tower when it is completed in 2011.
But, at Yonge and Bloor, people do not seem too concerned about the CN Tower being bumped down on the list of the world’s tallest buildings.
Kathy said Toronto has a lot more to brag about than the size of its buildings.
“We’ve got the Danforth, [we’ve] got Little Italy, we’ve got Little India – anything you want you can get it here,” she explained.
