One Canadian On Ethiopian Plane That Crashed Into Mediterranean

Wreckage from an Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed in the Mediterranean continued to wash up on the shore near Beirut Monday, as officials try to determine what caused the airliner to go down.

Ninety people – 83 passengers and seven crew – were onboard the Boeing 737-800, including one Canadian, which was headed to Addis Ababa from Beirut. So far, 34 bodies have been recovered and no survivors have been found. Several children were reportedly on the plane.

Weather was bad when flight 409 took off Sunday night and crashed shortly after. Torrential rain and lightning are believed to have contributed to the tragedy, Lebanese officials said, adding the plane was on fire not long after takeoff.

The plane had last been serviced on Dec. 25 and passed inspection, according to Ethiopian Airlines’ CEO Girma Wake.
