New On DVD – February 16, 2010

Law Abiding Citizen CityNews.ca Pick of the Week – Gerard Butler stars as Clyde Shelton — a regular guy who takes justice in his own hands after his wife and daughter are murdered in front of him and the Assistant D.A. (played by Jamie Foxx) takes a plea bargain with the killers instead of going to trial. You sympathize with Butler’s character and yet you cheer for him when he’s on his rampage. If you’re a fan of shows like Dexter or movies like Taken then this is a must-see. It will make your blood boil and you will stand up and cheer for Shelton when he seeks his vengeance. As far as revenge thrillers go, it’s one of the better ones. Special features include commentary with producers Lucas Foster and Alan Siegel, a behind-the-scenes featurette, and more. Also available on Blu-ray. Film *** DVD *** (out of 5 stars).

Coco Avant Chanel
– Before Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel was an iconic fashion designer, she struggled as a performer, had a few hot affairs, and moped around the French countryside. That’s the story that Coco Avant Chanel tells and those looking for a more in-depth history of the Chanel legacy will be very disappointed. Audrey Tautou stars in the lead role and does a wonderful job carrying the otherwise lifeless, disjointed, boring film. In French with English subtitles. Special features include commentary with writer-director Anne Fontaine, a making-of featurette, and more. Also available on Blu-ray. Film ** DVD ** (out of 5 stars).

Black Dynamite (Blu-ray)
– If the makers of Shaft had bad ADHD they would have made Black Dynamite. After his brother is gunned down, Black Dynamite (Michael Jai White) goes on a rampage taking out drug dealers, pimps, and kung fu masters. It’s campy, funny, and while being a spoof of the blaxploitation films of the ’70s, it comes out as a decent blaxploitation film itself. Look for a great cameo by Arsenio Hall as the pimp Tasty Freeze. Special features include commentary with the cast and filmmakers, deleted and alternate scenes, a making-of featurette, and more. Film *** Blu-ray *** (out of 5 stars).

Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!: Go For Gold
– Just in time for that sporting event happening in Vancouver comes an athletic-themed collection of episodes from the Nick Jr. kids show Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! Messages included promote teamwork, exercise as fun, and cheating as evil. That’s all great in my books and my two-year-old seems to be really into the characters and animation. Special features include music videos, printable colouring and activity sheets (for DVD-ROM only), and stickers of Wubbzy and friends. DVD *** (out of 5 stars).
