Emotional friends and family of teen idol Corey Haim attended a private funeral service in Thornhill on Tuesday.
The family of the 38-year-old actor asked for space after his death in Los Angeles last week, but more than a dozen reporters and fans from as far away as Philadelphia had gathered outside the Steeles Memorial Chapel.
Jennifer Matton said she drove up from the States on Monday night to pay her respects.
“I think I am his No. 1 fan,” said Matton, a 35-year-old nurse and mother of four.
“I’ve loved him since I was 13 years old … I loved him so much that my father even called to wish me condolences when he passed away.”
The actor’s longtime friend Corey Feldman said he wouldn’t be attending the funeral Tuesday to respect the family’s privacy, but was organizing a public celebration of Haim’s life in Los Angeles for next month.
Officials at City Hall confirmed they wouldn’t be paying for the funeral after rumours swirled in the media. The Toronto chapel hosting the service is helping to cover some of the costs.
Haim filed for bankruptcy in 1997 and reportedly owed the U.S. government $200,000 in taxes. He was living with his mother in L.A. when he died last Wednesday.
“The Lost Boys” star had an enlarged heart, pulmonary congestion and water in his lungs. The Los Angeles County coroner’s office has not yet released an official cause of death. There are reports claiming the actor was taking painkillers obtained through phony prescriptions.
