Walking Linked To Lower Stroke Risk In Women

Stroke is the third leading cause of death among Canadian women. A new study released Tuesday showed women who walked briskly at about 5 kilometres per hour had a 37 per cent lower risk of stroke.

Women who walked at least two hours a week at any pace had a 30 per cent lower risk, according to the study published by the American Heart Association Journal.

The study’s research examined about 39, 000 female health workers. The women were followed and periodically asked about their exercise and physical activity. In 12 years of study, 579 suffered strokes.

Some risk factors for stroke include high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, smoking and taking oral contraceptives.
