TORONTO, Ont. – Toronto city councillors are putting the finishing touches, Thursday, on the 2010 budget, which includes a 2.9 per cent residential property tax increase.
It’s Mayor David Miller’s last budget and he said this budget gets it right.
Miller said the city’s reserves have doubled under his leadership.
He also commended the senior management team.
“Prudent management of Mr. Pennachetti and his team have put us today in the good situation of having a budget that is reasonable, frugal and does not require the kinds of massive cuts or deficits that we’re seeing from governments around the world,” Miller said.
What really saved the city is a $350-million surprise surplus and $35-million in savings from the civic workers strike.
Miller, who is trying to convince all his colleagues on council to approve the budget, said it continues to support liveability and economic prosperity, with investments in public transit, public safety and the public library.
