Funny Money: Fake Toonies Spotted On Toronto’s Streets

Call it funny money: counterfeit two-dollar coins have been spotted on Toronto’s streets.
The impostor toonies tend to be much duller than the real McCoy. In the photo above, the coin on the left is fake.
CityNews reporter Cynthia Mulligan spoke with RCMP Corporal Tim Laurence to find out what you need to know. Check out the video below for her tips.
Note: on Wednesday, after this video aired, the Royal Canadian Mint issued a statement saying that the size of the Queen was not the sole indicator of the coin’s authenticity. In fact, a smaller crowned portrait was used from 1996 to 2002, while a larger uncrowned portrait was introduced in 2003.
