Sentencing For Fatal Drunk Driving Crash

A five year sentence was handed down Wednesday to Rehan Riaz, the young man convicted of killing two of his best friends and leaving another person with permanent brain damage after an alcohol fueled car crash in 2008.

Rehan Tanvir, 20, along with Fizza Rizvi, 18, were killed when the car Riaz was driving crashed going 130 km/h in a 60 km zone on Eglinton Ave. East.

Riaz had been driving his friends home from a barbeque, but ended up causing a six vehicle crash that injured nine people, including Usama Bin Farid who was left with injuries to his head, spine, liver, pelvis and legs.

Riaz only had a level G2 license at the time of the crash, which means it was illegal for him to consume any alcohol before driving. He also had a criminal record for a previous car theft.

He plead guilty to two counts of criminal negligence causing death and two counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm. The Crown had been asking for a 5-10 year sentence with a ten year driving ban.
