TORONTO – The stripping out of downtown Toronto in preparation for the G20 is about to get underway.
By the time the G2 summit begins at the Convention Centre at the end of June, Front Street and all the other streets in the designated security zone will look a whole lot emptier.
Hundreds of newspaper boxes and garbage cans are going to be removed to prevent them from being used as possible projectiles by violent protesters.
Hotdog vendors are also being asked to leave the security area starting June 11.
As an effort to further reduce vandalism, transit shelters are also being removed from the area.
As of June 4, security officials will begin to remove 745 newspaper boxes, 200 litter bins, and 29 transit shelters.
The area being cleared by security spans from Spadina Avenue to Yonge Street, and from Queen Street West to Lake Ontario.
