McDonald’s Recalls Shrek Glasses Tainted With Cadmium

McDonald’s is warning consumers to stop using its Shrek-themed drinking glasses because there is a known carcinogen in the painted design.

The fast-food giant announced the recall on Friday of all four designs of the U.S.-made glasses depicting Shrek Forever After characters Shrek, Princess Fiona, Puss in Boots and Donkey.

It follows the recall of 12 million glasses in the States after an anonymous tip led the Consumer Product Safety Commission to test the products for cadmium. The agency found the amount of the heavy metal leaching from their painted design was “slightly above” a safe level.

Cadmium is used to create reds and yellows in paint. It’s a known carcinogen which may also cause bone softening and severe kidney problems.

Arc International, the company that makes the glasses, said it learned of the problem late Thursday and will look into it.

The company is based in France, but the glasses came from its plant in Millville, N.J.

McDonald’s will soon provide information on how to obtain a refund.
