McDonald’s Canada has recalled all four versions of its “Shrek”-theme drinking glasses because the paint may contain the cancer causing chemical cadmium.
The recall is a precaution after the McDonald’s in the United States pulled 12-million promotional glasses off the shelf when cadmium was found in the painted design.
Dr. Margaret Thompson of Sick Kids Hospital told 680News parents do not need to panic.
“There’s a slight risk. If you’re holding the glass and sweaty hands, a little bit of the paint might come off in your hands. The exposure that we get out of drinking something out of these “Shrek” glasses is going to be minor, minute, maybe even non-existent.” said Dr. Thompson
She added that we are actually exposed to this chemical everyday.
“There’s a lot of cadmium in the ground. It’s a metal and so we find it in ground water, we find it in soil. We do have a daily amount of cadmium that we would eat normally.” said Dr. Thompson.
Cadmium can also be found in fish and cigarettes.
However, Dr. Thompson says if you ingest massive amounts it can lead to kidney and bone damage and even cancer.
The glasses were being sold to promote the fourth installment of the “Shrek” films called “Shrek Forever After.”
