Torontonians get set for FIFA World Cup

TORONTO – All of the city’s colours are about to erupt in pride as the biggest soccer tournament in the world gets set to begin – a half a world away – on Friday.
Street vendors and local storefronts across the city are already selling flags from all the nations, as 32 teams in eight groups battle for the Federation International de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup in South Africa.
And you can expect your local neighbourhood pub to be slightly busier than normal.
“From this upcoming Friday when Mexico takes on South Africa, I think most bars are going to be packed” said the FAN 590’s soccer analyst Alex Seixeiro.
Although the tournament will be full of soccer superstars, Seixeiro told 680News there is one player everyone will be watching: “The Brazilians and Luis Fabiano, who is a striker that perhaps a lot of people may not know about, but this is a guy who has the potential to be the Golden Winner.”
And for those unfamiliar with the term, “it is the guy who – when the tournament is all said and done – leads the World Cup in goals,” Seixeiro explained.
Italy is the defending champion, but other countries are expected to perform well.
“I think the Dutch should be there, so with Brazil, Argentina, Spain, the Dutch – those are just the few teams that you can look at and say ‘they should have big tournaments'”, Seixeiro said.
For those looking to set their soccer viewing schedule, games will begin as early as 7 a.m. Eastern Time, some will begin at 10 a.m., and the later matches kick off every day at 2:30 p.m.
