G20 Traffic Management Plan Released

Officials released details of their G20 traffic management plan Friday outlining the snarl-ups motorists will have to endure on major routes at the end of the month.

“We know that the traffic impact is going to be significant,” Toronto Police Sgt Tim Burrows warned.

While international dignitaries are in town you can expect temporary shut downs on sections of major routes, including the Gardiner Expressway, the Don Valley Parkway, Highways 401 and 427, starting Thursday, June 24 through to Sunday June 27.

Anyone traveling to the airport over the weekend should set aside plenty of time to make their flight.

“We don’t know, at this time, when the closures are going to take effect,” OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford said.

“It just depends on when these motorcades are coming in.”

Several road restrictions will also be in place in the downtown core around the security area surrounding the Metro Convention Centre on Front Street — the venue for the international summit.

Drivers are also being reminded to take note of revised parking signs in the downtown core during the summit. Authorities will remove vehicles left in unauthorized areas.

Police will have the ability to close highways and roads with just 15 minutes notice, resulting in traffic jams as long as 45 minutes. The restrictions will be put in place to accommodate the up to 80 motorcades, including up to 50 vehicles per procession, that will be led and followed by police motorcycles.

The Toronto Police Traffic Services unit, Peel Police and OPP are expected to provide even more detail on the road restrictions later Friday morning.
