TORONTO, Ont. – Spanish soccer fans took over Toronto streets, Sunday, after Spain claimed its first ever World Cup victory.
Spain pushed out the Netherlands 1-0 after 116 minutes of play.
The match was not pretty for much of the first half, with the Dutch committing 11 fouls and the Spanish contributing five.
The Netherlands also played for its first World Cup title. The Dutch have now lost three times in a final, in 1974, 1978 and 2010.
After the Spanish win, parties poured onto downtown streets, the biggest party being at College and Bathurst streets.
The party then made its way onto a streetcar. Thanks to the quick action of a TTC supervisor who saw that fans were about to grab the power lines, made the call to cut power.
680News reporter Irene Preklet was in the middle of the mania.
“The best way to describe this feeling on College Street is euphoric; flags waving, horns honking […] the party has literally taken over the street,” Preklet said.
Despite the massive crowds, there were no damage or injuries.
Before the game, Toronto bars and restaurants filled up with football fans.
Plaza Flamingo, a Latin food restaurant in Toronto, was one of the places to celebrate. Spain supporters gathered in the College and Bathurst area, waving flags, honking car horns, sporting jerseys and gearing up for, what they predicted would be, a victory.
