Plastic bag fee up to about six-cents due to HST

TORONTO, Ont. – The cost of a plastic bag is now up to about six-cents because of the Harmonized Sales Tax.

The 13 per cent HST equals two-thirds of a penny on the five-cent bag fee and it appears most retailers are rounding that up to a full penny.

Toronto mayoralty candidate Rob Ford is furious about this and told the National Post consumers are being taxed on a tax.

Shoppers Drug Mart said it will hold the charge for plastic bags at a nickel.
