Peterborough Grieves After Child’s Drowning Death

The Peterborough community was mourning Friday, after four-year-old Avrey Pringle was swept away by the Otonabee River Thursday morning.

“To see a young child pulled from the water like that certainly has an impact on you and it’s an image that you don’t forget very soon,” said Staff. Sgt Dan Smith of the Peterborough Lakefield Police.

“It’s horrible. I can’t imagine what it would be like to lose my daughter,” said resident Amy Fort.

A makeshift memorial of teddy bears has sprung up at the Inverlea Bridge, where police, family and friends frantically searched for the boy.

Around 8pm Thursday night, after 9-and-a-half-hours, the search was called off when the child’s body was discovered about 220 metres south of the Parkhill Road Bridge.

Police are still investigating and conducting interviews to piece together what happened leading up to the child’s death. They say he was in the company of some other kids, siblings and cousins at the time.

Avrey’s family was too upset to speak, but his father did want to thank the city’s emergency services for their efforts in trying to save little Avrey and in bringing the family some closure.
