Whitby Church Fire Deemed Arson

Investigators have ruled the fire that nearly destroyed Whitby’s All Saints Anglican Church was the work of an arsonist.
Flames broke out around 5am, Monday December 14, 2009 at the 143-year-old church, considered to be a pillar of the community.
Firefighters discovered a broken window and gas cans scattered on the ground nearby when they arrived on scene.
About 100 Christmas hampers being collected for the city’s neediest families were destroyed. Although the blaze damaged much of the church, it was deemed to be structurally sound, with the stained-glass windows surviving.
Damages ran at around $3 million dollars.
The investigation into this case is active and ongoing, but no arrests have been made.
