Man faces 9 charges after Swiss Chalet siege

ETOBICOKE, Ont. – The 50-year-old man involved in Friday’s siege at a west-end Swiss Chalet will face a total of nine charges.

According to police, Terrance McBurnie sat down at the restaurant around 4 p.m., ate a meal and then handed a note to the server informing her that he had a gun.

The manager of the restaurant was held inside with the armed man but exited the restaurant uninjured.

The suspect then directed everyone to leave the building and then locked himself inside an office.

Officers had the area surrounded for almost four hours while they attempted to make contact with the man inside the restaurant. Toronto Police Constable Tony Vella said a police negotiator was able to talk the suspect into surrendering.

“We made contact with him. The officers did speak with him and he decided to come out on his own accord.”

Police are still investigating McBurnie’s past and are requesting customers or anyone who knows the suspect to come forward.

He made his first court appearance Saturday morning and faces charges relating to firearms, conveying false message and mischief.

He remains in jail and will head to court Monday morning.
