Many Enbridge customers got a dose of sticker shock when they opened up their July bills: About 100,000 people saw charges ranging from $400 to $1300 on top of their monthly fees.
But some customers received a credit during the company’s year end adjustment.
Only customers who signed up for the budget billing plan (BBP) were affected. Enbridge charged BBP users a flat fee all year. Customers pay the same amount each month and the difference is made up at the end of the year.
The monthly amount is based on the previous year’s energy consumption. Enbridge admitted that in some cases, it set its rates far too low and has extended its customer service hours to deal with the problem.
Affected customers are being told they can spread this re-adjustment payment out over the next year if they need to with no penalty.
The company says the best time to call is before 9 a.m. or after 7 p.m.
