Khadr’s lawyer asking for triple time credit

OTTAWA, Ont. – The lawyer for Omar Khadr is asking for triple time credit if his client is convicted, due to accusations of illegal abuse while in custody.

In addition, his lawyer said in a pre-trial motion that Khadr should receive regular credit for his time in pre-trial custody.

However, the prosecution said Khadr was never mistreated and the military commission has no jurisdiction to decide on such a credit.

Khadr has been charged with killing an American soldier in Afghanistan in 2002, among other things, when he was 15 years old.

The war crimes trial is due to begin next week, but the sentencing-credit motion is one of several still to be heard before the actual trial gets underway.
